The Free Plan Reality

SurveyMonkey's free plan has been degraded to the point where it is only useful for tiny personal polls. Here are the limits:

10 questions per survey

Most customer satisfaction surveys need 15 to 20 questions. Employee engagement surveys need 30+. Ten questions barely covers basic demographics plus 5 to 6 substantive questions.

25 responses per survey

Not per month. Per survey. Your 26th respondent sees a closed survey. For any audience larger than a small team meeting, 25 responses is insufficient.

No data export

You can view results in the SurveyMonkey dashboard but cannot download CSV, Excel, or SPSS files. If you need to analyze data in Excel or any other tool, you cannot get it out.

No skip logic

Every respondent sees every question. You cannot branch based on answers. This makes the survey longer than necessary and reduces completion rates.

The free plan is a demo. If you need more than a 10-question poll for fewer than 25 people, you must either pay for SurveyMonkey or use Google Forms (free, unlimited questions, unlimited responses).

Free and capable enough

Based on your needs, Google Forms would work and save you $39/month. Consider SurveyMonkey only if you need professional branding, advanced question types, or industry benchmarks.

Response limits may vary by plan. SurveyMonkey Standard offers 1,000 responses/month; Advantage offers 15,000; Premier is unlimited. Typeform response limits are per-plan. Google Forms has no response limit.

SurveyMonkey vs Typeform at a Glance

SurveyMonkey Wins

  • Far more responses per dollar (15K at $49 vs 1K at $50)
  • Advanced analytics with crosstabs and sentiment analysis
  • Industry benchmarks for NPS and satisfaction scores
  • More question types (matrix, ranking, slider)
  • Stronger enterprise and HIPAA compliance features

Typeform Wins

  • Beautiful conversational UI with higher completion rates (40-60%)
  • Superior mobile survey experience
  • Better embedded form design for websites
  • More engaging one-question-at-a-time format
  • Better for lead generation and marketing surveys

SurveyMonkey vs Google Forms

The elephant in the room. Google Forms is completely free with unlimited questions, unlimited responses, and automatic Google Sheets integration. For 80% of survey use cases, it is sufficient.

Pay for SurveyMonkey when you need:

  • Professional, branded survey design
  • Complex skip logic and branching
  • Advanced analytics (crosstabs, sentiment, benchmarks)
  • HIPAA compliance for healthcare surveys
  • Team collaboration with shared survey libraries

Use Google Forms when:

  • Internal employee feedback or event registration
  • Simple customer satisfaction surveys
  • Academic research with basic analysis needs
  • Quick polls that do not need professional branding
  • Any survey where you just need answers in a spreadsheet

Annual vs Monthly Billing

PlanMonthly BillingAnnual BillingAnnual Savings
Standard$39/mo ($468/yr)$39/mo ($468/yr)$0
Advantage$49/mo ($588/yr)$33/mo ($396/yr)$192/year
Premier$119/mo ($1,428/yr)$99/mo ($1,188/yr)$240/year

Team plans require annual billing by default. Individual Standard does not offer an annual discount. Advantage and Premier save 15-17% with annual billing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do unused SurveyMonkey responses roll over to the next month?
No. Unused responses do not roll over. If your Standard plan includes 1,000 responses per month and you only use 200, the remaining 800 are lost at the end of the billing cycle. This is a common frustration for users with seasonal survey needs.
Can I create anonymous surveys on SurveyMonkey?
Yes. Anonymous surveys are available on all plans, including the free plan. You can disable IP address collection, email tracking, and respondent metadata. The anonymous mode is configurable per survey in the collector settings.
Is SurveyMonkey HIPAA compliant?
HIPAA compliance is available only on the Team Premier plan ($75/user/month, minimum 3 users). SurveyMonkey provides a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) for Team Premier subscribers. Individual plans (Standard, Advantage, Premier) are not HIPAA compliant. If you collect protected health information, you must use Team Premier.
What formats can I export survey data in?
Paid plans support CSV, XLS (Excel), PDF, and SPSS formats. The free plan does not support data export at all. You can only view results within the SurveyMonkey dashboard on the free plan. This is one of the most restrictive aspects of the free tier.
What happens to my data if I downgrade my plan?
Your survey data is retained even if you downgrade or let your subscription lapse. However, access to some features may be limited. On the free plan, you can view results but cannot export them or use advanced analytics. Your surveys and responses are not deleted.
Does SurveyMonkey offer annual billing discounts?
Yes. Annual billing saves 15 to 17% compared to monthly billing. Advantage drops from $49/month to $33/month billed annually ($396/year). Premier drops from $119/month to $99/month ($1,188/year). Team plans require annual billing by default.
Can I embed SurveyMonkey surveys on my website?
Yes. All paid plans support survey embedding via iframe, popup, or inline embed. The free plan allows basic link sharing but does not support embedded surveys. Typeform is generally regarded as having better embedded survey experiences with higher visual quality.
